Manual CPC

In one lineYou set the click bids; Enhanced CPC is gone.

Manual CPC is the old-school strategy where you set the maximum cost-per-click bid yourself, keyword by keyword.

You are the algorithm here. Every keyword gets a ceiling that you type in by hand, and that number is the most you are willing to pay for a single click on it. Nothing adjusts on its own. If a keyword is converting well and you want to be more aggressive, you raise the bid yourself; if it is bleeding budget, you drop it yourself. For a long time marketers paired this with Enhanced CPC, an automatic layer that nudged your manual bids up or down per auction.

That layer is gone. Enhanced CPC was retired for Search and Display in early 2025, and campaigns that were still using it were moved back to plain Manual CPC. So today Manual CPC really does mean manual, with no automatic assist riding on top of it.

Be honest about the tradeoff. Next to Smart Bidding, manual bidding is rarely the optimal choice anymore, because you cannot react inside every individual auction the way the machine can. Google is reading dozens of signals in the moment and adjusting the bid for that specific person; you are setting one number and hoping it holds. What manual still buys you is total control, which matters for tiny accounts, unusual setups, or situations where you do not trust the automation yet. Just know that control comes at the price of your time.

Use it when you truly need the wheel in your hands, not out of habit.
