Optimized Targeting is a setting that lets Google look beyond the audiences you selected to find more people likely to convert.
You meet this switch on Display and Demand Gen campaigns, and it is on by default in most builds. When it is active, Google treats the audiences you chose as a starting point rather than a boundary. It reads your live conversion data and looks beyond your manually selected segments to find people it thinks will also convert, including users who were never in the segments you picked. Your audience choices become a launch pad, not a fence.
You will notice this because it changes what your targeting actually means. You might attach a tight custom segment and still see conversions coming from people well outside it, because the system decided they looked like buyers. On Demand Gen it can go a step further and expand past your demographic signals too, reaching ages or income brackets you did not select when it predicts better performance for a spend of rupees.
This is the big shift from old-style targeting. Optimized targeting deliberately spends outside your chosen audience whenever it predicts a conversion, which can help you scale or can drift into junk. It leans heavily on your conversion tracking being clean, because that data is what teaches it who counts as a good outcome. Do not leave it on and look away: watch where the conversions come from, check they are real, and tighten your goals or turn it off if it wanders.
It will chase conversions past your audience, so make sure your conversions are worth chasing.
