Auction overlap is what happens inside Meta's auction when two of your own ad sets try to reach the same person at the same moment, and rather than let them bid against each other and push up your own costs, the delivery system quietly enters only the one it expects to perform best.
Picture the setup you probably run all the time: you build three ad sets inside one campaign, each with what looks like a different audience, and you expect all three to spend and give you three clean reads. What actually happens is that whenever those audiences contain the same person, Meta refuses to let your ad sets compete with each other, so at the moment that person becomes available it picks the single ad set it thinks will win and holds the others back. From the outside it looks like one ad set is running hot while the others sit there under-delivering or showing almost no spend at all, and you start wondering if something is broken in the setup when nothing is broken at all.
This matters because it quietly wrecks the thing you were trying to do in the first place. You thought you were splitting budget across three tests, but if the audiences overlap, your money and your conversion data are all piling into whichever ad set Meta favors, and the other two are starving. So the account looks busier than it is, you are paying for structure you are not actually using, and the comparison you wanted to make between those ad sets is not really happening. The underlying cause is audience overlap, the two audiences sharing the same people; auction overlap is just the delivery consequence you see in the reporting.
The fix is to reduce the overlap itself, not to add more ad sets on top of it. That means consolidating the overlapping ad sets into one, or using exclusions so each one points at a genuinely separate group of people. If you respond to the starving ad sets by spinning up even more that target similar audiences, you are just feeding Meta more candidates to choose between, and it will keep picking one and sidelining the rest.
If your ad sets are fighting over the same people, Meta already picked a winner for you, so stop splitting them and start separating them.
