Reported results are what Meta says it drove for you inside Ads Manager. Real results are what actually landed in your business. They are rarely the same number, and the reported one is almost always bigger.
It is worth understanding why the gap exists, because it is built into how the reporting works, not sprinkled on by anyone dishonest. Ads Manager counts every sale that fell inside the attribution window and touched one of your ads, credits itself for those sales, and then adds modeled conversions it estimated but never directly saw. Do the same on Google and TikTok and each platform claims the same buyer, so their numbers add up to more sales than you actually made. Stack on the view-through conversions and the buyers who were coming anyway, and the reported figure floats well above the money that reached your account.
This matters because the two numbers pull you in different directions. The reported number, read alone, tells you to pour more budget in, because on screen everything looks profitable. Your bank balance, and your blended numbers, often tell a quieter, truer story. The honest cross-checks live outside the platform: MER, your total revenue over your total ad spend across everything, and incrementality tests for what the ads genuinely caused rather than merely stood beside.
The gap is not Meta lying to you, it is what attribution structurally does, but that does not make it safe to ignore. Scaling spend on the reported number by itself is the classic way an account looks like a winner in Ads Manager while slowly bleeding in real life. Let the platform number guide the steering inside the campaign, and let your blended, in-the-bank numbers decide how much money the whole channel actually deserves.
Optimize inside the campaign on what Meta reports, but decide how much to spend on what actually reached your bank.
