The Traffic objective is the setting where you pay Meta to send people to a destination you pick, whether that is your website, your app, a WhatsApp or Messenger chat, or a phone call.
You have a page you want people to see, so you tell Meta where you want them sent and Meta goes and finds people who are likely to make the trip. What matters here is the mechanics of what Meta is actually being paid to do, because it optimizes for the click or the landing page view and nothing after that. It does not care whether the person reads your page, buys anything, or fills in a form once they arrive. It cares that they tapped and showed up, and it is one of the six campaign objectives Meta currently offers you.
This matters because it is the cheapest way you have to get real people onto a page. When your goal genuinely is visits, like sending people to read an article, watch something, or get a first look at a brand they have never heard of, Traffic does exactly that job and does it well. You are warming a cold audience or filling the top of your funnel, and Meta will happily go and find you people who click.
The trap is treating a click like a customer, because Traffic optimizes for clickers and not for buyers. Meta will go and find the people who love tapping ads, and a good number of them will bounce off your page the second it loads. If what you actually want is sales or leads, do not run Traffic and quietly hope the purchases follow, because they mostly will not. Run the Sales or Leads objective instead so Meta hunts for the outcome you care about rather than the click that sits in front of it.
Traffic gets people to the door, and that is the whole of what it does.
