Customer list matching is when you upload your own customer list to an ad platform so it can find those same people among its users and target them or exclude them.

You take your customer file, the emails and phone numbers, and load it into Ads Manager or Google Ads. The platform then looks for the same people inside its own user base and builds an audience out of the ones it recognizes. Your file never gets uploaded in plain readable form. It gets scrambled first, on your side, so the platform matches without ever reading the raw emails.

Say you export the two hundred people who bought from you last quarter and upload that list. Meta finds, say, a hundred and fifty of them on Facebook and Instagram, and now you can show ads only to those buyers, or do the opposite and hide your ads from them while you chase new people instead.

A customer list audience is a snapshot, not a live feed. The people on it keep changing, so a list you uploaded six months ago slowly goes out of date and needs refreshing, and platforms also set a minimum size before an audience will even run.

Your customer list is an audience you already earned. Use it.
