Breakdowns

Breakdowns are the switch in Ads Manager that splits one average result into its parts, by placement, age, region, time, and more, so you can see where the number actually came from.

A campaign result is almost always an average, and averages hide as much as they show. A cost per result that looks fine on the surface can be a great number on one placement quietly carrying a terrible number on another, and you would never know from the top line. Breakdowns pull that apart. You take the same spend and the same results and you cut them by a dimension, say by placement, and suddenly you can see that Reels is winning while the right column is bleeding, or that one age band is doing all the work while the rest just spend. Nothing about the campaign changed. You just stopped looking at the blended figure and started looking at the pieces.

This matters because most real optimization decisions live inside the breakdown, not in the average. The average tells you whether something is broadly working. The breakdown tells you what to actually do about it, which placement to trim, which audience is carrying the result, which region to stop funding. Read only the top line and you end up killing a decent campaign over one bad segment, or scaling a weak one because a single strong segment flattered the whole thing.

Breakdowns show you where results happened, not always why, and that difference matters after the 2026 privacy changes. Some breakdowns are less complete than they used to be because a slice of the underlying signal is missing or modeled, so treat a breakdown as a strong clue rather than a courtroom verdict, especially on small numbers where one or two conversions swing a whole segment. Use it to find where to look, then confirm before you make a big cut.

The average tells you if something works; the breakdown tells you what to do, so never optimize off the top line alone.
