A cost per result goal is the average price you tell Meta you are willing to pay for one result, and it then works to get you as many results as possible while keeping that average close to your number. If you started running ads a few years ago you probably know this setting as Cost Cap, because that is what Meta called it until they renamed it. Same control, new label, so do not get thrown when a guide says Cost Cap and your account says Cost per result goal.
Say you have worked out your economics and you know you can pay up to 500 rupees for one lead and still come out ahead. You set your cost per result goal to 500. From there Meta goes into the auctions and tries to bring you leads at around that number, buying as many as it can find at or near that price rather than just grabbing the cheapest possible volume and hoping the cost behaves. You are telling it the ceiling of your comfort, and it spends toward that.
The word that matters here is average. This is an average target, not a hard wall on every single result, so Meta will pay a little over 500 on some leads and a little under on others, and what it is protecting is the blended number across all of them, not each one in isolation. That is exactly why it is useful for scaling. Instead of chasing raw volume and praying your cost stays sane, you hand Meta the number your economics can carry and let it push spend up while holding that average steady.
The trap is setting the goal too low, because a number your business would love is not the same as a number the auction will give you. If you pick a price Meta cannot actually win auctions at, it will not magically find cheap results that are not there; it will slow right down, barely spend, and leave you with a handful of leads instead of many affordable ones. Base your goal on a cost you have already achieved in the account, get it spending, then tighten it gradually and watch what happens rather than starting tight and wondering why the campaign went quiet.
Give Meta an average you can actually afford, not the one you wish you could.
